Four Stimulus Projects for Seniors

As we all take some time to think about the future after almost a year on pause, now is a great time to consider finding ways to start working on small projects that will help you continue to enjoy your home as you age. If you are an American who is receiving a stimulus check and are in a position to stimulate the economy – rather than use the money to stay afloat – making those senior-focused home improvements is a great way to invest in your home and your future.
While major home renovations will exceed the amount of a standard stimulus, there are many projects you can tackle – or bring in TruBlue to help with – that will make a difference without breaking the bank. Since safety is a number one priority, we’ve decided to start there. Here are our top four lower-budget home improvements you can invest in for less than $1,000.
Lighting: Poor lighting can easily be a trip hazard, especially if you have grandchildren leaving things on the floor, rugs over hardwood or tile, steps inside or outside, or even just a raised threshold between rooms. When we’ve lived in our homes for a while, it’s easy to feel like you know the terrain backward and forwards, but as our steps become a little less sure, missing a step can be catastrophic. We recommend looking at your home with a TruBlue professional to think about which rooms could use a lighting upgrade, either through new hardware or even just brighter bulbs.
Grab Bars: No one likes to think about adding grab bars to the bathroom or kitchen, but those simple rails can truly save your life – as long as they are installed correctly. They also don’t need to look like your grandparents grab bars! Your local TruBlue technician can help you figure out where the bars might be most needed in the future, help you select the ones that are right for you and then do a professional installation. It’s not an expensive project and it can make a huge difference for your future self.
Security Systems: Even if you live in an incredibly safe neighborhood, having a security system can make a huge difference, both for you and for your loved ones. A high-quality security system – which we can help you install – can not only protect you from potential thieves but also alert you to other emergencies, like fire or carbon monoxide. Many systems can also put call buttons in multiple rooms or on a personal device in case of an emergency.
Railings: If you live in a ranch on a flat lot, then this probably isn’t something to worry about, but for the rest of us, those railings going up and down the steps, leading into the basement and even outside to the stoop can loosen over time. Having those tightened, installed, or at least inspected is a must. While we may not depend on those railings for much of our lives, you want to make sure they’ll hold when you really need them.
If you’re ready to talk about these projects, or another home upgrade, your local TruBlue is ready.
