Get a Fresh Perspective on the Safety of Your Home
Sometimes our brains run on autopilot – we get to work without remembering half of the drive, we read pages in a book only to have to re-read them the next day, we step carefully over the crack in the basement floor for the thousandth time... While that autopilot allows our brains to think about other things, it also means it’s easy to forget (or even to see) the challenges of our own homes.
That’s where a Home Safety Assessment comes in.
Whether an assessment is something you do as you renovate your home, or as you’re preparing to have loved ones live with you or it’s a requirement in order to return home after a hospital stay, having a trained, objective, professional walk through your home and create a list of adjustments that should be made can help prevent falls – and potential fall-related deaths – in the future.
When you work with TruBlue for a Home Safety Assessment, one of our Aging-in-Place experts will visit your home, talk to you about any concerns or worries you have about how your home is currently equipped and about any special considerations that we should understand. From there, we do a 75-point Home Inspection. Every room is reviewed for falling hazards, ease of mobility and elements that can help with stability. Our team member will review the list with you and provide you with any quotes for home modifications you’d like us to help make.
Common home modifications we provide include:
- Wheelchair ramp installation and removal
- Doorknob replacements
- Switch and outlet access modifications
- Handrail installation and removal
- Keyless Entry Systems
- Doorway widening
- Fixing walkways or entrances to your home
- Bathroom remodeling
- Zero entrance tubs and showers installation
No one likes to think of themselves – or someone they love – as an older adult at risk of falling, but the truth is that one in four adults over the age of 65 falls every year and, of those falls, 20 percent cause serious injuries. While not every fall is preventable, 90 percent of falls happen in the home and many of those can be prevented with home safety modifications, according to the National Council on Aging. Being able to age safely in place all starts with a Home Safety Assessment.
