    • Scott and Terri Dingfield

      Scott and Terri Dingfield

Scott: From a young age, I wanted to be involved in building or repairing houses, but my education and professional experience took me in another direction. I graduated from the University of Nebraska Omaha with a degree in public relations and business. From that point, I worked in lawn care and landscape construction with Lanoha Nursery, customer service for Enterprise Rent-a-Car, led the marketing efforts at Grace University and then spent the bulk of my career, nearly 15 years, leading the marketing and innovation efforts for Home Instead Senior Care’s global network. After Home Instead, my childhood interests came full circle as I started a company focused on helping older adults, and their families, during their home downsize and transition process as we purchased and renovated their homes. I also became a licensed contractor. Terri: My dad passed away in early 2016 after a series of strokes and a six-month end-of-life journey. During this time my siblings and I helped my mom make health and financial decisions and maintain their home. But in the mix of all that, we just wanted to spend time with my parents – quality time, not get stuff done time. Exiting that season, I felt strongly that I wanted to help older adults and their families manage all the “stuff” so they could experience the benefit of a stress-free time together. I was excited to discover the opportunity with TruBlue Total House Care so we could do exactly that – help busy families with their chore list (and their parents’ list) and help maintain and update the homes of older adults so they could continue living at home. Personally, I am blessed to work with my husband Scott. We celebrated 20 years of marriage in 2019 and we enjoy time with our high school age daughters. Professionally, I graduated from Grace University with a degree in business management. I worked at Mutual of Omaha Fund Management Company, was Director of Admissions at Grace University, a stay-at-home mom, had part-time roles with a local start-up indoor farmer’s market and served in a recruiting and admissions role at Lifegate Christian School. Why Start TruBlue in Omaha? We started TruBlue in Omaha because it perfectly meshes our desire to help older adults and their family members during the aging process with our interest in working on houses. From 2001 to this point, Scott’s professional focus has been to understand the concerns and meet the needs of individuals 65+ and their adult children. Nearly 90% of all Americans want to age at home, but that conversation usually ends up with two questions families wrestle with: Will mom/dad need extra care to remain independent in their home? Can mom/dad continue to take care of the house itself and maintain a safe living environment? Some families decide it’s time to sell the house and move their loved one into a care community. Other families figure out how to care for their loved one at home either on their own or through private duty home care. When this happens, all the energy goes into their loved one’s care (rightly so), and what happens in some situations is the house itself is neglected and starts to deteriorate. For older adults, it is our dream to bring them relief and peace of mind by maintaining their house and property so small problems don’t become costly fixes. For their family members, we know we can save them time spent on house projects so they can use their evenings and weekends on family time instead of tool time

The amount of technological advancements that we’ve made over just the past 10 years has been uncanny.  Although there are many different types of technology that are beneficial to the population as a whole, there are many technologies that can help us even more as we age.  These technologies range from things such as camera systems all the way to smart watches. All of these different technologies have their own specific benefits to seniors in how they can impact their lives. 1. Amazon Echo.  Amazon Echo may be one of the most versatile and potentially life saving devices for seniors.  Amazon’s speaker can allow seniors to more easily interact with family members through their hands-free calls option.  Not only can Alexa help you take phone calls, but it can also allow you to create grocery lists, check the weather, and allow you to set alarms for when you need to take your medication.  Devices such as the Echo Show also allow you to get face to face screen time with caretakers or family members.  Although all of these features are useful, where the Alexa truly shines is when paired with your carbon monoxide detectors, smoke alarms, and broken glass sensors,  these all combined allow for the overall safety of your home to be increased drastically. 2. Simplisafe Video Doorbell.  Another product that focuses on increasing the overall safety of your home is a video doorbell.  Video Doorbells can help identify whether the person at your door is just the local girl scout asking you to buy her cookies or whether it may be someone sinister.  These video doorbells are great for seniors who want the extra security of knowing exactly who’s at their door before they open it.  These doorbells are motion activated and allow you to have it so it will record anytime there is motion, or just when actual people are at your door.  The cameras are perfect for monitoring the front area of your home for any possible issues. 3. Smart Watches.  Something that most people wouldn’t necessarily think as much of a tech item that would benefit seniors is a smart watch.  Smart watches such as the Fitbit Versa 3 have features that can help track things such as your heart-rate, oxygen saturation levels, and your breathing patterns.  This information can be critical to ensuring that your body is operating in a healthy and proper way.  These smart watches also have things such as sleep trackers which can tell you exactly how you sleep each night.  Sleep tracking can help show you exactly when you were asleep, restless, or when you were awake.  Smart watches are a great tool for keeping your health in check. 4. Senior Home Monitoring Systems.  Companies such as Seniors Home Services offer 24/7 monitoring systems that don't use any cameras.  These systems use motion sensors and AI to help identify possible problems in the home, which can be essential for preventing falls, and reducing readmission rates to the hospital.  Another thing that these 24/7 monitoring systems can detect is leaving the stove or detecting if a fall has happened.  Lastly, most companies including Senior Home Services include a wearable button that can be worn as a necklace or bracelet for when you're outside of the home to keep you safe. 5. GrandPad Tablet. The GrandPad tablet aims to take out the difficult features of a traditional iPad, and simplify the user experience.  Although having this minimalist user interface, it still has the same features as a traditional tablet.  The features included with this tablet range from web browsing, video and phone calls, music playback, games, photos and camera function, and much more.  When looking at aging-in-place, this tablet can also allow you to do tele-health visits with doctors to help make sure your health is in check. This tablet is great for the senior who may want something more to do with their time, however doesn’t like the hassle of more difficult to operate tablets. 6. Automatic Pill Dispenser.  As we age, making sure that we keep up to date on our medication is extremely important.  Although pill boxes are great for some people, some might need an extra reminder.  The Hero pill dispenser for example, makes a noise and flashes lights whenever it is time to take your pills, if you don’t hear that alert, your phone will also send you an automatic notification.  Automatic pill dispensers are perfect for someone who may have multi-dose prescriptions that have to be taken multiple times per day. 7. Tracking Devices.  Tracking devices can be especially useful for the older generation, who might otherwise have difficulties remembering where their things are.  A perfect example of these tracking devices is the Tile.  Tile’s device can be easily fit in your wallet or on your keychain.  These devices allow you to track wherever your lost goods are and will play a beeping noise when you press a button on your phone, helping you find your items. 8. Smart Home Systems. Smart Home Systems are another great example of technological advancements in the past 10 years.  Smart Home Systems are perfect for seniors not only for safety reasons, but also for their ease of access.  Smart Home Systems allow for almost all features of a house to be controlled by one central unit.  A perfect example of some of these control features being able to automatically lock all of your doors at a specific time.  Another incredible feature of smart homes is the amount of home automation that comes with a smart home.  Automation in smart homes include automatic temperature control, blind opening, light activation and many more.  These systems also help prioritize energy efficiency, which can help you save on energy bills.  Smart homes are a great way to help make your house safe and provide you with some convenience when controlling your home. Overall, there are so many different technologies that can be both beneficial as well as entertaining to seniors living at home.  All of these different technologies can help make your life much easier as well as provide you with the security that you need.  Technology is truly paving the way for an even better future for seniors looking to age-in-place.
With the summer in full swing, people are going to be spending much more time outside. Whether people are spending this time with friends or family or if they’re enjoying the outdoors alone, having a nice yard is key when it comes to enjoying your summer. We’ve already talked about ways to keep your yard safe for the summer season, read it here, but now we want to talk about fun additions to your set up. There are many different things you can add to your yard to help make it as welcoming as it can be. We decided to compile a list of some projects that you can do in your own backyard to bring some life to it. 1. Building a Paver Patio. One of the first things you can do to help make your backyard as welcoming as possible is to give yourself some outdoor space to sit down in. A custom paver patio is a great spot to sit around and just hangout with your friends and family. Paver patios are highly customizable as well. You are able to choose the type, shape, size, and color of the pavers and you’re able to customize how big you want your patio to be. Paver patios also do not require an incredible amount of materials other than the pavers themselves and some sand. 2. Building a Fire Pit/Grills. Fire Pits are a staple in summer activities, and they really tie together a backyard. Whether you're just using the fire pit for warmth on a windy summer night or making smores with the neighborhood kids, they are excellent for bringing people together. Fire pits aren’t too hard to make either, get some patio pavers and stack them on top of each other in a circle and, tada, you’ve got a fire pit. Fire pits are great for making some small treats such as smores, but making a built-in grill can be great for cooking anything else. Grills are the perfect backyard accessory for welcoming families over to a backyard grill out. Grills, although not as cheap as a fire pit, are much more useful when it comes to creating meals compared to something as simple as smores. 3. Kids Play Area. Another great project that you could do in your yard is building a dedicated kids play area. Kids play areas could be anything from a playground, a tire swing, or even a sandbox. These kids' play areas will help encourage them away from their screens, and to be outside with their friends. Involve your kids in the process, allow them to choose between two playsets, or even help you set it up. The more ownership kids get in the process the more pride they will put into their play. Getting your kids outdoors can not only be good for them, but also for you, giving yourself some precious freetime to relax. 4. Gazebo/Canopy. Depending on where you live, in the summer months you know that sometimes it can get really hot, and staying in the shade is essential. One of the best and most appealing ways of staying cool is to build a canopy over your back patio or deck. Canopies not only look great but also function amazingly in shading you from the sun. Gazebos are another great backyard project as they can provide a great shaded comfortable area to chill out and read a book. Lastly, Pergolas are also great for those who want to be even more shaded, but still have plenty of sun. All of these different options provide you with many different ways to enjoy your outdoor space and stay shaded this summer. 5. Redoing Decks. Decks are a great place to lounge and host gatherings, however many people’s decks have been neglected over the years. Decks can become worn out and lose the shine that they used to have. Whether your deck has a few holes in it, needs to be restrained or painted or just completely redone it’s a great backyard project. Decks can also have a lot of splinter pieces that could also catch on someone’s foot or paw if you aren't careful, regular sanding and maintenance of your deck could also be a good thing to do to help prevent injury. 6. Water Features. Water Features are a great way to spice up your backyard. Water features can be anything from installing a pond, a fountain, or even putting in a small pool. Ponds are a great way to make your backyard look great and come to life. Patio Pavers and decks can be built around ponds to make your yard feel like a jungle, and provide a seamless transition between the various features of your backyard. Pools are also a great way to cool off and relax during the hot summer days and above ground pools are both an affordable way to cool off as well as an efficient way to enjoy your summers. 7. Privacy Fencing and Landscaping. One of the most important projects you could do in your backyard is landscaping. Landscaping is extremely important for making sure that your yard looks inviting and beautiful. Making sure that your flowerbeds are mulched properly and that your trees are trimmed help turn a potentially ugly yard into a beautiful yard. Another great project that your yard could use is a privacy fence. Privacy fences are especially great if you have pets, however they are just as useful without them. Privacy fencing can make your backyard look so much more enclosed and safe, without privacy fencing your yard can feel like it bleeds into your neighbors and vice versa. Overall, keeping your yard well landscaped and properly fenced in truly makes your yard feel like home. Each of these many different yard projects can really just add to the feel of your backyard and make it a much more enjoyable place to be. When you combine yard projects such as a paver patio and a firepit together it can really just bring your whole yard together and give it a more cozy feel. Overall, these yard projects are the perfect to keep you occupied for this summer. TruBlue and our skilled handyman are equipped to help you out with many of these tasks, if you run into trouble completing them or want professional and helpful service from the start.
It’s getting warmer and starting to feel like summertime. When the weather gets nicer we know that more people spend their days outside enjoying nature. Although spring and summer are beautiful, there are some inherent dangers to the outdoors that we have to remember, especially as we age. We’ve put together a list of 5 outdoor safety tips and ticks for the aging adventurer in your life. 1 Decluttering your Sheds and Garages. Decluttering your space is extremely important when trying to prevent many issues, such as cleanliness and tripping hazards. Decluttering can also help prevent the masking of potential critter and bug infestations. It can also reduce the amount of dust that builds up, for cleaner air aiding with allergies. Garages and sheds are great for storage, but if it becomes cluttered, disorganized, or if it’s bursting at the seams, the space no longer is safe and now poses a risk for items falling down and becoming tripping hazards, and making your items unusable because they’re too hard to access. 2 Proper Lighting. As we age, our eyesight deteriorates rapidly, which makes having proper lighting on both the inside and outside of the house extremely necessary. Making sure that your home is properly lit on the outside can help prevent tripping when walking over unstable ground and terrain. There are many different types of lights that you can use on the exterior of your home, but some of the best ones to use are motion sensor lights, path lights, and stair lights, all of which can help make the exterior of your home the best and safest it can be. Some lights are even solar powered so you’ll never have to worry about changing a battery or running electricity from your house to the lights. 3 Outdoor Shade Cover. One of the best things for people of all ages to do for their health is to sit outside and get some fresh air, however as we grow older there are some increased risks for doing so. As we age, we become more susceptible to contracting skin cancer from the sun's harmful UV rays. A good way to enjoy the outdoors while also staying safe from the dangerous UV is to invest in a shade cover. A fabric shade cover can block up to 98% of the sun’s harmful UV rays, along with cooling your patio by up to 20 degrees. There are many other types of covers that can protect your skin from the sun including pergolas, umbrellas, awnings, and canopies. Shade covers can help you get that freedom of enjoying the outdoors again, without putting you at risk for skin cancer. 4 SHS Monitoring Technology. One new feature offered by Seniors Home Services is their Remote Care Monitoring technology. Their Remote Care Monitoring system uses motion detectors, sensors, and AI to detect unusual behaviors in the residents home, without invasive cameras. Behaviors such as inactivity, open doors late at night, and the stove or water being on for too long are all detected through their sensors. All these different sensors paired with the AI software can help notify technicians of potentially hazardous situations. The system helps reduce the risk of falls and allows for quick responses to falls should they happen. This system also includes a necklace that has a button on it in case you run into trouble while outside of your house. 5 Enhance your Outdoor Mobility. Mobility is important for everyone, but its importance grows as you age. Ensuring that you’re able to move freely around your home and yard is an essential part to being able to Age-in-Place. If you utilize mobility devices, such as walkers, canes, or scooters, getting an outdoor ramp and widening your entrance way is extremely important to get around comfortably. Not only is being comfortable extremely important, but the safety that these ramps provide is extremely important for everyone using them. Ramps provide that extra mobility for people who need it the most. TruBlue offers services such as ramp installations and doorway widening, which can help make mobility much safer. To help with clutter, we have our maid service, which allows for customizable options as far as scheduling and what work you need done. Installation of Outdoor Shade Covers can also be done by our TruBlue Tru-Pro home technicians. TruBlue technicians can also install external motion detectable lights that can help make sure you get where you need to be in the dark. Lastly, since TruBlue is partnered with Senior Home Services we can help get the Remote Care Monitoring system up and running.
